A well-styled bookcase does more than store books, it tells a story, showcases your personality, and enhances your home's aesthetic. Whether you're aiming for a minimalist look or a curated collection of treasures, these expert tips will help you style your bookcase like a pro.
1. Embrace the 3-5-7 Rule
Grouping items in odd numbers. Specifically three, five, or seven—creates a more visually appealing and dynamic display. This technique adds balance and authenticity to your shelves, making them more engaging to the eye.
2. Mix Books with Decorative Objects
Combine your favorite reads with decorative items like vases, sculptures, or framed photos. This mix adds depth and interest to your shelves. For instance, stack a few books horizontally and top them with a small decorative object to utilize vertical space effectively.
3. Incorporate Art and Personal Touches
Leaning artwork or photographs against the back of the shelf adds layers and personality. This approach draws the eye and creates a sense of depth. Layering smaller items in front of the artwork can further enhance this effect.
4. Play with Color and Texture
Organize books by color to create a cohesive look, or introduce a color scheme through your decorative items. Mixing textures, like combining glossy ceramics with woven baskets adds tactile interest to your display.
5. Leave Breathing Room
Avoid overcrowding your shelves. Leaving some space empty allows each item to stand out and prevents the display from feeling cluttered. This negative space is essential for a balanced and aesthetically pleasing arrangement.
6. Rotate Seasonally
Refresh your bookcase decor with the seasons. Swap out items to reflect seasonal colors, themes, or holidays. This practice keeps your space feeling current and allows you to showcase different aspects of your style throughout the year.
7. Don't forget the plants when styling your bookcase
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I have plants in every single room. It’s kind of my thing. And for good reason! Adding plants to your bookcase is one of the easiest ways to breathe life into the space, literally.
Cascading vines like pothos or ivy soften hard lines and create a beautiful sense of movement. Small potted plants add texture, color, and natural variation that instantly elevates your shelf styling. Plus, plants improve air quality and bring a sense of calm and connection to nature which is always a win in my book.
Pro tip: Mix plant types and pot styles for extra interest. And don’t worry, faux plants are welcome too if you're not blessed with a green thumb (we won’t tell!)
