The Health and Design Benefits of Indoor Plants and Outdoor Living Spaces

Updated: May 7

Why Live Plants and Outdoor Spaces Are Essential for a Healthy, Beautiful Home

As an interior designer and realtor, I’m a firm believer that nature belongs in the home. Whether it’s a thriving fiddle leaf fig in your living room or a serene patio space filled with greenery, plants have the power to completely transform a space... not just visually, but mentally and emotionally, too.

And I practice what I preach! I recently stopped by one of my favorite local nurseries, Earthscapes Garden & Home, to gather fresh inspiration and products for both indoor styling and Mother's Day gift ideas. If you’re local, you’ll definitely want to check out my latest posts on social media for a peek at the beautiful finds I featured.

Health Benefits of Live Indoor Plants

Incorporating live indoor plants into your home offers a host of health benefits backed by science. Some of the key perks include:

  • Air purification – Plants like snake plants and peace lilies filter toxins and improve indoor air quality.

  • Increased oxygen – They naturally oxygenate the air, which helps improve breathing.

  • Boosted focus & productivity – A bit of greenery on your desk can increase concentration and reduce fatigue.

  • Lower stress & anxiety – Just seeing and tending to plants can regulate cortisol levels and promote calmness.

Think of indoor plants as natural wellness tools. Both functional and beautiful.

Mental and Emotional Wellness Through Biophilic Design

Biophilic design is a term used in interior design that focuses on connecting humans to nature and it's more than a trend. It’s a growing movement. Studies show that natural elements like plants, wood textures, and sunlight reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and promote a deep sense of wellbeing.

Plants encourage us to slow down, be present, and nurture something living. These small rituals create comfort, routine, and joy, which are especially important in today’s fast-paced world.

Plants in Interior Design – Bringing Life and Texture Into the Home

When designing a space, I always try to incorporate live plants into interior design whenever possible. Why?

  • They bring organic texture to clean-lined spaces.

  • They soften modern interiors and add visual movement.

  • They fill awkward or underutilized corners with beauty and purpose.

  • They pair perfectly with neutral color palettes, adding depth without overwhelming a room.

Whether you're designing a minimalist space or a cozy boho nook, there's a plant that can enhance the look and feel.

Outdoor Living Spaces: The New Home Sanctuary

Today’s homeowners and buyers are increasingly prioritizing outdoor living spaces. Patios, balconies, and backyards are no longer afterthoughts... they’re essential parts of the home.

Your outdoor space is an extension of your interior, and it deserves the same attention. With the right layout, greenery, lighting, and outdoor furniture, you can create a personal retreat just steps from your door. I call it “designing your sanctuary”. Giving yourself a peaceful place to recharge, host loved ones, or simply enjoy the fresh air.

In my experience as a realtor, outdoor living areas have become one of the most in-demand home features, especially when they feel intentional, lush, and livable.
